STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE INCLUSION

We are a group of B.Ed. students studying the implementation of inclusive education in the classroom setting.  We are attempting to discover the “how” of this process.  Also, we would like to deduce which education methods and strategies work best in an inclusive setting. As future practitioners of education, we cannot avoid this issue and will at some point in our careers find ourselves at the helm of an inclusion class.  As such, we believe that research into this subject can improve our abilities as the educators and guides of future generations.

Have you been able to discover the “how” of the process? Discuss.

  1. I'M POSSIBLE lies in the word IMPOSSIBLE. Thus the question How has many solutions. Let us discuss one at a time. First and foremost is the identification of students to be included based on the various criteria interms of background, special needs, disablity etc.. This would help in categorizing them and accordingly plan as to where and how they can be included and to what extent.
Secondly, inclusion should start right from the pre-primary level as that would cultivate a feeling of acceptance by the other children and would thereby help the child with special needs to grow normally with other children of his age.
The school plays a vital role in the overall development of every child, hence the environment should be conducive for learning to take place.
The teachers should be provided with additional training to handle such students which means every teacher should be a special educator too.
Curriculum should be customised so as to cater to the grasping abilities of these children.
Activity based learning is the modern mantra which caters to the needs of every child. Even Project method can be used to teach such children along with the normal ones. Special classes or Remedial classes should be conducted for such students so as to keep them at par with the normal ones.
Finally,we can take inspiration from initiatives taken by Institutions like Teach for India, RPG group, Aseema (NGO) who work with a difference. They are enlighting every such child's heart and mind with a hope that they are in no way less from the rest of the world. They help each such child to maximise their potential and bloom to the fullest. One should not only have a vision but also a mission to accomplish it.

    1. Its great to know that you have developed a fair amount of understanding on how inclusion would be implemented in education however there is no need for identification of students on different criteria to be included in a classroom. TO ACHIEVE INCLUSION IN REAL SENSE, ONLY IF ALL OTHER OPTIONS FAIL SHOULD THE CHILD BE SEPARATED FROM THE MAINSTREAM CLASSROOM AND PUT UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF A RESOURCE TEACHER.

  2. According to me all the subject are good and well organized/planned but to cater the students in inclusive setup.... teachers need to plan how to provide variety of learning experience and they should use various type of method of teaching which require maximum student participation... that what will make difference.

  4. teachers need to provide multi-sensory instructions to students, so that each may learn in different ways and those with gifted abilities would have an enriched learning environment.

we as teachers should not discriminate among students, bcos all students are equally important.teachers should be provided with special training so that they cater to the needs of all students.teacher should use innovative technique and make best possible efforts that all students participate in all activities

  6. i feel practical will work rather than theory. according to the special needs of the students the strategy should be used. its the talent of the teacher to identify the need of the child and work on it. for eg: a for dyscalculia child teacher must stress on the basic maths problems. and an important thing for the teachers is that don't make negative remarks about the student in fornt of the crowd....................

Group activities should be encouraged for the betterment of children bonding with each other.
Teacher should be trained enough to empathise each and every child's mind set and be a good guide.
Curriculum should be set in such a way that all levels of children are able to manage.
Practical studies should be followed rather than normal lecture mathod for easy understanding.
